Tigers are now on the endangered species list. This is because they are being killed all around the world since the tigers get threatened when they see humans. They have been around as long as the extinct dinosaurs. There are over 12 different species of tigers. Out of these 12 species 3 are extinct. The Caspian, Bali, and the Javan Tigers are extinct. While the Sumatran, Bengal, Indochinese, South China, and the Amur (Siberian) tigers still live today.
A female tiger gives birth to two cubs each time that it is pregnant. Every cub lives to be about 25 years old, but can live to be older. As you can see from looking at the picture below these cats are very loving and playful animals. The female tiger’s number one job is to take care of her cubs and to protect them from harm. She is not viscous, but if someone threats her and are about to hurt her cubs then she would do what ever it took to keep her cub safe. A male tiger also has a special job, his job is to hunt for the meaty food.
Tigers are Carnivores who hunt for their own food. Tigers who live I the wild usually eat about 40 pounds of meat at one time, but animals at the zoo only eat up to about 10 pounds of meat at one time. If wild tigers eat a meal of 40 pounds then it would most likely go for a couple days to a week with out eating. Their favorite animals to eat are deer and wild boar, but if these animals are not around in their territory then they would eat other animals such as antelope, buffalo, guar, domestic livestock, peafowl, monkeys, civets, porcupines, fish, frogs, crabs, large monitor lizards, thons, and young elephants or rhinos. Just because these animals are carnivores does not mean that they don’t eat fruit or vegetables. If there is no prey around the tiger it would most likely eat fruit and vegetables such as grass, fruit, or berries. Tigers in zoos are mainly given prepared horse to eat.
Tigers without cubs live alone because if the do they have a better chance of getting it’s food because if the tiger is alone it does not have any trouble with either fighting over the food with another tiger or having the other tigers interfere with it’s stocking and killing. This idea of living alone helps all tigers live an easier life killing it’s prey for it’s meal All tigers own their own territory in Africa. Every tiger usually has 10-30 square miles, but the amount of the area that they have as their territory depends on the amount of food that is available in it’s territory. Siberian tigers sometimes have territories that are as large as 120 square miles. Even though most tigers live alone in their own territory some times territories overlap one another. A male tiger's territory is most likely to be the one who overlaps another tigers territory. They would most likely overlap their territories onto several female territories. Tigers mark their territories by spraying plants such as bushes and trees with a product of theirs that’s made of a mixture of urine and scent gland secretions. These animals also leave scratch marks on trees to prove that that tree is already owned by another Tiger.
All wild tigers live in either the think forest or tall grasses area in the continent of Asia. This area of the continent is usually warm, just how most the tigers like it. The Siberian tigers are the only species of tigers who live in very cold areas. They hide in bushes and always have plenty of prey to kill and eat. Tigers do not like being in wide open grass lands because there is no place to hide so they can sneak up on their prey.
